All places need interior design. It's obvious that some of these places are homes, offices, and other commercial buildings, but what about prisons, rehabs, and shelters? It has been brought to my attention today that these places are in desperate need of interior design. The places and people that need it most, are the one's most neglected. Some reasons why is the fact that there's just not enough money in that area of interior design, but also, some people just don't care. It may go beyond some people's ethics, but who is willing to do it?
I wouldn't mind designing the interiors of the places because my job as an Interior Designer is protect the health, safety, and welfare or people. Who is helping these people? It shouldn't matter if it's a prisoner, a patient, or homeless. They still need a place that is safe. Prisoners still deserve to be in a safe place regardless of why they are in prison. They still have the right to live until it's their time. The same goes for the homeless; regardless of what they did to be in the predicament they are in or how they got there shouldn't deprive them of their rights as a human. Those in rehab lack the design relief that is required in an interior. Design relief is a major concept and those who are rehabilitating are some who need it most; yet they have it least.
Going to these places to do research in creating a better interior for these people would be the only thing I would struggle with. Seeing their faces and looking into their eyes would be the hardest part. But I would have to remember what I am there to do; better their conditions. Being able to improve their minds and everyday life is what matters.
Who else is willing to better these unnoticed interiors and unrecognized people?
The design or lack of effects people everyday. There needs to be better understanding of the psychological effect a space has on a prisoner, patient or homeless. But one may say that a better design would could cost more. This is not necessarily true. There are elements such as paint that can be implemented that do not cost more.
